Using its Adjust option, you can choose the document view as Braille, Print, or Dual. Print view wasn’t working for me during testing. Apart from this, you can personalize some user settings, specify lines per page and cells per line, paragraph style, spellcheck options, edit SpeedBraille keys, etc.

If you've done everything exactly as specified, (and Itake no responsibility for what will happen if you haven't,) all should bein readiness. Now, when you boot this "risk" disk, it should go straightto the MAIn MENU: no CONFIGURATIONs to enter, disks to turn over, or spacebars to hit!

Braille is a system of raised dots arranged in cells, and any combination of one to six dots may be raised within each cell. The position and number of the raised dots within a cell tells the reader the letter, number, word, or symbol that cell represents. Within a single cell, there are 64 possible combinations of raised dots. There are 3 different grades of braille due to the varying needs of braille readers.

Grade 3 is the last of the grades of braille and is basically a system of braille shorthand. It is not used in publications because it has not been standardized. Instead, it is normally used by individuals for personal convenience. It makes great use of vowel omission and contains over 300 word contractions. In addition, to shorten the length of the final document, the amount of spacing between words and paragraphs is decreased. And, sometimes it substitutes combinations of punctuation symbols for words.

We recently read a review of a new program for theCommodore computer. The headline and first paragraph left us totallyincensed.

Some Disadvantages: We'd need at least 50 subscribersto justify producing a disk edition. It would not be cheap: we'd need tocharge around $50 a year.

The Heading Test option on the Main Menu has been inproved to makeit easier for both blind and sighted users. The numerical scales have beenremoved. BETTE now reports the number of characters in the instant grade 2translation.

But you don't have to go overboard. You can meet a lot of users' needs by adapting work patterns or simply adjusting your current hardware or software. Giving the largest monitor to the most visually impaired user makes sense, for instance, as does changing PC settings to display larger fonts.

About The Duxbury Braille Translator for Windows

At our Center, BRAILLE-EDIT is used for threefunctions: to transcribe braille, to write documents, and to assist in theteaching of typing. For none of those functions is it necessary orparticularly desirable to have to enter a CONFIGURATION name and to passby the STARTING MENU. These procedures take time and complicate the livesof those users who don't need to know anything about the operation of theprogram. So I succeeded in modifying my Version 2/50 so that the programboots straight to the MAIN MENU.

13

BRAILLE-EDIT Versions 2/44A and earlier are no longerbeing supported. We will only offer the special package price to upgradeto Version 2/50 until 1 July 1985. For $40, you get the Version 2/50 disk, print and audio manuals. After 1 July 1985, the fact that you purchasedBRAILLE-EDIT sometime back in 1983 will become irrelevant!

The document, while still an Appleworks wordprocessing file, is first run through the Sensible Speller spellingchecker (Prodos version). 14

Apart from their respective braille project formats, many of these software let you save braille file in formats like BRF, PDF, PNG, JPEG, etc. You can also emboss braille document by setting up a braille embosser.

MCS is sound, with increased salesof increasingly competitive products. The rumor of financial problems hada grain of truth to it. MCS had a temporary cash crisis several monthsago. As is the case with most small businesses, MCS does not have a "sugardaddy" to help it ride a temporary crisis. MCS had no choice but todirectly cut their operating costs. MCS chose to lay off 15 people, bothas a cost cutting move and as a way to implement some management changes.

Where you need to be sure of perfection, (just as you would proof-read print books) we would certainly recommend that you also make use of proofreading by a knowledgeable braillist. That braillist may be a DBT user as well because DBT is just as important to professional transcribers -for swift conversion to braille from a wide variety of print sources.

Duxbury DBT: Braille Translation Software

Sighted people sometimes read ASCII braille as plain text by displaying it with a standard print font. ASCII braille can also be displayed as blackprint dots by using a consistent braille font. Duxbury's SimBraille© and Braille fonts are consistent with North American ASCII Braille.

Where you need to be sure of "perfection," we would certainly recommend that you also make use of proofreading (just as you would proofread print books) by a knowledgeable braillist -who may be using DBT as well. That is because DBT is just as important to professional transcribers -for swift conversion to braille from a wide variety of print sources.

FAQ For Duxbury Braille Translator for Windows

This typical scenario was not at all what I expectedwhen I first came to work for the Topeka Resource Center for theHandicapped (TRCH) in November, 1980. TRCH is one of many Centers forIndependent Living scattered throughout the country. It is a centergenerally operated by, staffed by and used by persons with disabilities, regardless of the type of disability. Back in those early days, accessibility of Center materials was generally confined to cassette tapesand an occasional braille document, but only when there was plenty oftime, something which was never deemed to be more than a highly infrequentoccurrence.

George tells me that, at a conference in 1969, there were four braille embossers being shown. His BraillEmboss was the only page brailler; the others (by Carbonneau, Morrison and Knox respectively) were all embossing on paper strips (being modified teletype paper tape punches). The December 1976 issue of the Braille Automation Newsletter December 1976 issue of the Braille Automation Newsletter lists 4 page embossers: the MIT BraillEmboss, the Triformations LED-1 and LED-120, and the French Sagem Embosser. So early development of braille embossers was slow, and they were expensive.

As many readers may be aware, there is increasingcompetition in the sensory aids field. This competition seems to havespawned quite a few rumors. Some rumors are absolutely false. A few monthsago, I received quite a few phone calls claiming that Triformations wasfiling for bankruptcy. In truth, Triformations is doing better than it didlast year, and has no intention of filing Chapter 11.
